How do I set up a Crested Gecko Cage?

The most important factor in choosing a cage for your crested gecko is "ventilation". Of course, it's important to have enough space for the size of the animal, but different cages come in different sizes, so ventilation is the first thing to consider. Many crested gecko breeders and keepers agree that ventilation is very important. Since they defecate in a relatively small cage, the fecal gases must escape directly from the cage or it can be fatal to their health. Also, once or twice a day, we have to spray the walls of the cage, and when we do that, the humidity gets excessive, and if you have an unventilated cage, that excessive humidity can stay there for a long time, and it can kill them.

A big part of choosing a wellventilated cage is, of course, the amount of ventilation holes. This doesn't mean just a few ventilation holes, but a good amount of ventilation, preferably mesh, and if possible, holes in the ceiling and sides, especially since gases escape from the bottom up. Exotera's glass enclosures look like they only have mesh on the ceiling, but there are gaps at the bottom of the enclosure doors and between the doors and the enclosure walls that allow air to come in from the front and escape through the ceiling. Sometimes, there are people who keep tropical fish in a tank with a lid only, but the tank is completely closed on the bottom and sides, so it is vulnerable to air circulation. In fact, there have been cases where individuals have died due to this problem, so you should be careful when choosing a tank. Since crested geckos are so popular, there are a number of products available for their care. It's best to choose one of these to keep them.

As for the size of the cage, there are usually small, medium, and large cages available in specialized products, and while a large cage is recommended if possible, the larger the cage, the more you have to fill the structure, which can be difficult to manage, so it is recommended that you rotate the cages according to the size of the individual.
 

Decorating the inside of your cage

Crested geckos are arboreal lizards and spend most of their time in trees, so it's a good idea to fill the interior with structures they can climb and rest on. Natural driftwood (bamboo, mangrove, branch driftwood, etc.) or artificial vine driftwood is great, and artificial plants, artificial vines, etc. can also be used for hiding and climbing on plant stems. There are also products called backing, which are made of a cane-like material or EVA, that can be cut to size to replace driftwood and placed between the walls of the enclosure, or bent to fit and left in the enclosure.

Having plenty of structure in the enclosure is partly to mimic the natural environment in which the crested gecko lives, but it's also to prevent a condition called floppy tail. Floppy tail is a condition that occurs when a crested crab is stuck upside down against a cage wall at a perfect 90-degree angle, causing gravity to cause the tail to droop and, over time, deform the spine, causing the tail to bend at a perfect right angle. If this condition persists, the spine and pelvis can become completely misshapen. It's a condition that can be prevented by providing plenty of structure, as it's caused by having nowhere to hang the tail if there's only a 90-degree wall and no structure around it, which is rarely the case in nature. If you have a severe case of floppy tail, you're going to have to cut off the tail.

And a hiding place is a must. Crested geckos spend most of their time hiding and sleeping during the day, and only become active when it's dark, so you'll need something that will make them feel safe from predators during the day. You can use natural driftwood, or you can utilize artificial decorations from the market. If you're keeping a large number of birds, you can use cut up egg cartons. A word of caution when using egg cartons, be sure to use new ones, not used ones, so you don't have to worry about bacterial growth. 

The floor should be lined with flooring. Many people use kitchen towels because of their simplicity. If you want to use something a little more natural, bark is fine. Some people have said that bark can be dangerous if an individual swallows it, but it's a common material in nature, so it's not often that something goes wrong with it. If bark were dangerous, crested geckos in the wild would probably be extinct.

And while it's not necessary, it's a good idea to keep a bowl of water handy, because while spraying the wall once or twice a day is sufficient for their hydration needs, some individuals drink a lot of water.
